Fire reveals 474 pot plants inside Seattle restaurant

An electrical fire at a South Seattle restaurant uncovered hundreds of marijuana plants in the eatery’s basement.

Firefighters responded to the My Canh Restaurant in the 6000 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Way after a 911 caller reported black smoke pouring out of the building.

Once the smoke cleared, they found a large marjuana grow inside the restaurant's basement. There were 474 plants in all, investigators said, as well evidence that show the growers planned to add on.

"It is very dangerous to have marijuana grow in the basement of a public restaurant like that," said Lt. Michael Kebba of the Seattle Police Department's Narcotics Unit.

Police said the marijuana was being cultivated in a small storage area filled with lights and fan. They said the growers had bypassed a power meter and added so much load to the system that it overheated and sparked the fire.

"There were so many connections down there. It overloaded the conductors and heated 'em -- massive, massive, dangerous situation in there," said Jeff Joy of Seattle City Light.

No arrests in armed robbery of Columbia City business; 2nd in one month

Less than a month after a Columbia City sandwich shop was robbed at knife-point, Seattle Police Department (SPD) is investigating the armed robbery of another business in Columbia City.

SPD spokesman Mark Jamieson said it was about 10:40 a.m. today when South Precinct officers responded to the call of an armed robbery to a business in the 4800 block of Rainier Avenue South between South Angeline Street and South Edmunds Street.

"According to the victim," wrote Jamieson, "an unknown black male, early 20′s, approximately 5′ 09″ tall, medium build, wearing a baseball cap, black t-shirt, and black shorts walked into a store and approached the clerk [and] asked for change for a dollar bill."

When the clerk opened the till to get the change, the suspect pulled out a handgun and pointed it at her before grabbing money from the open till and fleeing southbound on Rainier Avenue South.

A subsequent area search proved unsuccessful and the suspect remains at-large.

Shots fired in attempted medical marijuana rip

Seattle Police say that a group of men opened fire on the home of a medical marijuana grower in the Rainier Valley Saturday night after the victim refused to sell them drugs without a prescription.

According to Seattle Police Department spokesman Jonah Spangenthal-Lee, it was about 11:30 p.m. on April 28, when three men knocked on the door of the victim’s home near 54th Avenue South and South Roxbury Street—where he operates a medical marijuana grow and dispensary—and asked if they could buy some marijuana.

"The victim spoke with the suspects through the front door of the home, and discovered none of the men had a doctor’s note allowing them to legally purchase prescription pot," wrote Spangenthal-Lee. "When the victim told the suspects he could not sell them marijuana, one of the suspects tried to force his way through the victim’s front door and was met with a blast of pepper spray from the victim."

In response, one of the suspects fired several bullets into the victim’s front door before the group fled.

The victim was not injured in the shooting.

Gang Unit detectives are investigating the case.

Five arrested after "smash & grab" robbery, brief standoff

Five arrested after "smash & grab" robbery, brief standoff

Five people were arrested on Monday after a "smash and grab" robbery led to a brief standoff at a home on Brandon.

Things began around 11 a.m., when police were called to the Cash America/Pawn X-Change store on the 5700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Jeff Kappel with Seattle Police said that five people, four men and a woman, walked into the store, smashed the jewelry display with hammers, grabbed the jewelry and fled the store. They were seen leaving the store in a silver Chevrolet Cruze sedan.

Not long after, Kappel said the five were seen at a home on the 4400 block of S. Brandon Street. Police immediately went to the house, and after calling into the house, one man came out and was arrested. However, the four others stayed inside and a standoff began.

SWAT members were called to the home, and shortly after their arrival, the other three men came out and surrendered. But the woman refused to come out. After a short while, SWAT went inside, and Kappel said they found the woman trying to hide from them. She was arrested and brought outside.

Traffic stop, foot chase, bucket of weed, oh, my!

Seattle Police say  that two people were arrested and a five-pound bucket of marijuana seized early Tuesday morning in Rainier Beach.

According to Seattle Police Department (SPD) spokesman Jeff Kappel, it was 12:22 a.m. on April 24th when officers stopped a car in the 9800 block of Renton Avenue South for running a red light.

"Just as the suspect vehicle came to a stop two male suspects (the driver and front seat passenger) exited the vehicle and took off running," wrote Kappel. "Officers gave chase and observed both suspects enter the back door of a house in the 9600 block of 53rd Avenue South."

He said that additional officers responded to the scene and surrounded the house while others used their patrol car’s public address system and called for all persons inside the house to exit.

"Two females exited the house, one adult female and the other believed to be in her late teens (later determined to be a mother and her daughter)," added Kappel. "The adult female gave consent to search the residence."

A subsequent search uncovered both male suspects who had run from officers earlier, as well as a five gallon bucket of cut marijuana.
